August is giving skywatchers a rare treat with a super blue moon that promises to be a spectacular sight. A super blue moon is a rare convergence of a full moon, a blue moon, and a super moon. The moon will appear larger and brighter due to its closer proximity to Earth. Peak visibility will be on Monday afternoon, but you can catch it from Sunday morning through early Wednesday. This unique event won’t happen again until 2037, so grab your binoculars and don’t miss out!

Historically, August’s full moon is called the Sturgeon Moon, named by the Algonquin tribe for the abundance of sturgeons in the Great Lakes during this time. This connection to both culture and nature makes the event even more special.
