Welcome to Community Spotlight, a short new feature on Willamette News. The rule is simple: I only write about places I actually go to and enjoy. First up is an easy pick: Salt & Straw at Bridgeport Village.

Salt & Straw started in Portland in 2011, when cousins Kim and Tyler Malek opened their first scoop shop. Today it's known nationwide for its odd flavors, but it still feels like an Oregon shop. Walk up to the counter and the staff will steer you toward "Tasting it all." They really do want you to sample before you commit.

Right now the menu board features the limited-edition Halloween Series, which runs through October: The Great Candycopia, Jack O' Lantern Pumpkin Bread, Creepy Crawly Critters (yes, real edible bugs), Witch's Brew Fruit Punch Sherbet and a vegan Chocolate Graveyard Cookie Crumble.

My order never changes, though: Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons. It's the best thing in the case. Part of the reason is local. The shop sells the Bitterman's Flake Sea Salt used in that flavor, from Mark Bitterman, author of the James Beard Award-winning book Salted.

Don't skip the retail wall. It carries Bitterman's salt, pint totes, stickers and "A Whiff of Waffle Cone," a candle made with Portland perfumery Imaginary Authors. You'll also find co-founder Tyler Malek's cookbook with JJ Goode, America's Most Iconic Ice Creams, if you want to try this at home.
