SALEM, Ore. - The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a Frost Advisory for the Salem area and much of the Mid-Willamette Valley, in effect from 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, to 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23.
Forecasters say temperatures as low as 33 to 36 degrees will lead to frost. A Freeze Watch follows from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, to 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, when sub-freezing lows as cold as 31 degrees are possible. Both were issued Wednesday evening.
Where it applies
The alerts cover the East Central and West Central Willamette Valley, which include Salem and Keizer, along with the North Oregon Coast Range, the Cascade foothills of Marion and Linn counties and the Lane County Cascade foothills.
What to do
The weather service says frost and freezing temperatures could kill crops and other sensitive plants and could damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Forecasters recommend taking steps now to protect tender outdoor plants, moving sensitive potted plants indoors, and covering plants with a lightweight cotton fabric such as bedsheets or thin blankets to help hold in heat.
