BEND, Ore. - At least two people were taken to St. Charles Bend after a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in southeast Bend on Thursday afternoon, and the shooter is dead, according to the Bend Police Department.

At about 12:59 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, Bend Police responded to reports of an active shooter at the school, at 61530 SE Stone Creek Lane, police said in a FlashAlert release. The first call reported that an unknown man had shot into a car. In the next minute, Deschutes County Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting that a person had entered the school and begun shooting.

Dispatch sent an alert for all law enforcement to respond. Officers were on scene at 1:02 p.m. Seconds later, officers reported the suspect had been shot and killed, possibly by a bystander, Bend Police said.

Police said they have confirmed multiple victims. At least two people were transported to St. Charles Bend. Their conditions have not been released. Children are among the victims, police said. Officials have not publicly released the shooter's identity or a motive. Some national outlets and social media accounts have reported deaths among victims, citing unnamed federal sources; Willamette News has not confirmed that with local authorities. The Bulletin reported that no other deaths have been confirmed.

"We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy," Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said in a statement released through Bend Police. "We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing. Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders."

Bend-La Pine Schools said all schools are canceled Friday, Oct. 16, and that all activities and athletics are canceled as well, according to a district statement shared by Central Oregon Daily News and reported by The Bulletin.

Oregon State Police and local FBI agents are assisting at the scene, OPB reported. There will be a large law enforcement presence near the school and at the reunification site for the foreseeable future. Please avoid the area, police said.

Information for families

Law enforcement evacuated classrooms at Silver Rail Elementary. Students were transported by Bend-La Pine Schools buses to Journey Church, 61303 S. Highway 97, near Goodwill and Dairy Queen, for reunification. Families and guardians are asked to go there.

Silver Rail Elementary has about 450 students, The Bulletin reported. Pine Ridge Elementary, R.E. Jewell Elementary and Caldera High School were also placed in lockdown. Those lockdowns have since been lifted.

A press conference is planned for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Bend City Hall, Bend City Councilor Ariel Mendez told The Bulletin. The public is asked to stay away from the school and church areas.
