Community Spotlight: The Wilds Taphouse & BBQ smokes it slow at Newport's Wilder Corner

Quick Read
The Wilds Taphouse & BBQ serves house-smoked barbecue at Wilder Corner, 755 SE College Way, in Newport's South Beach neighborhood.
Plates start at $20 for one meat and two sides. Brisket, tri-tip, tacos, wings, burgers and Monster Nachos round out the menu.
Level 2 ChargePoint EV chargers sit out front, with a 4-hour parking limit.
Winter hours: closed Tuesday, open Monday from 4 p.m. and from noon the rest of the week (11:30 a.m. Sunday).
Up the hill from South Beach, past the bridge and tucked into the pines near Oregon Coast Community College, The Wilds Taphouse & BBQ has become a reason to leave U.S. 101.

The restaurant sits at Wilder Corner, a small commercial center whose sign also lists Fowler Homes, Steady State Bookkeeping and the Newport Symphony Orchestra. The building is cedar-sided with a metal roof, and a covered patio with picnic tables sits next to the smoker.

Owners Dave and Jill Redlich run a menu built on house-smoked meats without sticking to one textbook barbecue style, according to press coverage posted on the restaurant's website. The site also points to a dog park, a disc golf course and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails nearby, and the restaurant says it offers vegetarian and vegan options along with local and craft beer and cocktails.
On the menu

BBQ plates: one meat and two sides for $20, two meats for $27 or a half rack of ribs for $27. Meats include pulled chicken, pulled pork and ribs, with tri-tip (+$3) and brisket (+$4).
Street-style tacos ($12), including Chile Colorado braised brisket.
Fried Brussels sprouts with Huli sauce ($11) and a pound of smoked-then-fried wings ($18).
The Wild's Burger with house-ground brisket ($14 or $17), a BBQ sando ($16) and a crispy chicken sando ($16).
A Hawaiian-style mixed plate ($16), Monster Nachos ($28, or $15 for a half order) and loaded mac ($20).
The menu carries a fair warning: everything is made from scratch, so please be patient.
Our pick: the Monster Nachos and the mac and cheese.
Charging up
EV drivers heading down the coast can plug in while they eat. Level 2 ChargePoint charging stations sit in the lot out front, with a posted 4-hour parking limit. That is plenty of time for a meal and a meaningful top-up.

Charging at home? The ChargePoint HomeFlex Level 2 charger on Amazon uses the same network app as the stations out front.
