SALEM, Ore. - The National Weather Service in Portland issued a Dense Fog Advisory at 8:47 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, for the Salem area and much of the northern Willamette Valley. It is in effect until noon Saturday.
Forecasters say visibility is down to one quarter mile or less in dense fog, and the low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous. An earlier weather service statement said areas of fog, some locally dense, formed early Saturday across the Willamette Valley, with roadway visibility of a mile or less and rapidly changing conditions for morning drivers. Freezing fog was also possible where temperatures had dropped below freezing.
Where it applies
The advisory covers the East Central and West Central Willamette Valley, which include Salem, Keizer and much of Marion and Polk counties. It also covers the Tualatin Valley, the Portland metro area, the Lower Columbia River and the Vancouver area and Clark County lowlands in Washington. A separate Dense Fog Advisory covers the Benton, Linn and Lane county lowlands.
What to do
The weather service says drivers should slow down, use their headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of them. Pedestrians and cyclists should wear bright or reflective clothing so others can see them in poor visibility.
