Quick Read

  • Kalshi traders now price the Golden State Valkyries at 70% to win the 2026 WNBA championship, up from 47% a day earlier.

  • The swing followed Golden State's 64-55 win over the Atlanta Dream in Game 5 on Monday, which gave the Valkyries a 3-2 series lead.

  • Polymarket shows almost the same picture, with Golden State near 71% after a jump of about 22 points.

  • Game 6 is Thursday, Oct. 29. The Valkyries are in only their second WNBA season, one year ahead of Portland's expansion Fire.

A single game flipped the WNBA Finals in the eyes of the betting crowd. Heading into Monday night, with the series tied 2-2, traders on the prediction market Kalshi had the Atlanta Dream as slight favorites to win the title. By Tuesday morning, the Golden State Valkyries were clear favorites.

As of about 10 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday, Kalshi's WNBA champion market priced Golden State at 70 cents on the dollar, which works out to roughly a 70% chance in traders' eyes. A day earlier the same contract sat at 47 cents. Atlanta's side moved the other way, from 54 cents to 30 cents. That is a swing of more than 20 points in 24 hours on a market that has traded about 2 million Golden State contracts this season.

This is a market, not a forecast

Prediction-market prices show what traders are willing to pay right now. They are not a prediction from Willamette News, and they can move fast. A 70% favorite still loses about three times in ten. Treat the number as the crowd's current read on the series, nothing more.

What moved the market

Golden State beat Atlanta 64-55 at Chase Center in San Francisco on Monday to take a 3-2 series lead and move within one win of the franchise's first championship, according to the WNBA and the Valkyries. Kiah Stokes had 13 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and three 3-pointers. Veronica Burton added 13 points, eight rebounds and a playoff career-high four blocks, and Tiffany Hayes and Cecilia Zandalasini scored 12 each. Rhyne Howard led Atlanta with 20 points.

The series has seesawed. Golden State won Game 1, 68-64. Atlanta answered with lopsided wins in Games 2 and 3, 79-65 and 97-71, a combined 40-point margin that helps explain why traders still leaned toward the Dream with the series even. The Valkyries then won Game 4, 67-62, and Game 5, holding Atlanta to 55 points.

A second opinion from Polymarket

Polymarket, another prediction market, landed in nearly the same spot. Its 2026 WNBA champion market showed Golden State at about 71% and Atlanta at about 29% on Tuesday morning, with the Valkyries up roughly 22 points over the past day. When two separate markets agree this closely, it suggests the move reflects the game result rather than one thin pocket of trading.

Why it matters in Oregon

The Valkyries joined the WNBA as an expansion team in 2025. The Portland Fire followed this year and finished their first season 17-27, fifth in the Western Conference, and missed the playoffs. Golden State went 32-12 in the regular season and beat Portland 95-77 at Chase Center on June 2. If the Valkyries close it out, they would show Fire fans how quickly a new franchise can contend.

What's next

Game 6 is Thursday, Oct. 29, according to the WNBA. A Golden State win ends the series. An Atlanta win forces a deciding Game 7. Expect the market to swing hard again either way.
