Quick Read

  • The former Macy's at Salem Center, 400 High St. NE, is slated to become an indoor roller rink called The Expo.

  • The operator is Skateland 2 You, the mobile rink company now running sessions at Roto-Rooter Park in Keizer.

  • Skating at the mall is set to start Jan. 2, 2027. The Keizer rink closes after its New Year's Eve skate on Dec. 31.

  • Hours and prices for the new location have not been announced.

Downtown Salem's biggest empty storefront may soon have wheels on the floor.

Skateland 2 You, which brings its own rink floor, skates and staff to venues around the mid-Willamette Valley, plans to move into the vacant Macy's space at Salem Center under the name The Expo. Plans call for a main rink, a separate area for beginners and an advanced section with ramps and rails, according to reports published Oct. 30. The Statesman Journal first reported the plan.

Macy's closed its Salem Center store in 2025, and the building was put up for sale this year at $7.9 million. Mall leaders said at a downtown business meeting in the spring that they wanted to fill empty spaces, including the old Macy's and the former movie theater, with entertainment and events instead of traditional retail.

Skateland 2 You has been running a pop-up rink at Roto-Rooter Park, home of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, since Oct. 2. Most sessions there cost $10 with skate rental included, with all-ages, adults-only and themed nights Wednesday through Sunday. That run ends Dec. 31, and skating is expected to pick up at Salem Center two days later.

Willamette News has not yet seen a City of Salem permit for the conversion, and the company has not posted hours or prices for The Expo. We will update this story when they are announced.

Also coming up at Salem Center: the Mall Rats Music Festival on Nov. 28 and a holiday craft fair on Dec. 12.
